How to Calculate Crypto Profits

Crypto can rise in value while your actual profit stays small or even turn into a loss after fees. Learning how to calculate crypto profits starts with matching each disposal to its cost basis, then accounting for fees and any income earned along the way.

Use the steps below to build a clear trade record and separate realized results from paper gains. The examples focus on U.S. tax treatment, which can differ by jurisdiction.

Step 1: Gather Your Crypto Transaction Records

Start with the raw record for every crypto event. A price chart can show what an asset did, but it cannot tell you which units you acquired, what you paid, or whether a fee changed the result.

Export the transaction history from each exchange you used. Then add records from personal wallets and any other place you received or moved crypto. A transfer between wallets you own usually isn't a disposal by itself, but the trail helps show where an asset came from and where it went.

For each event, keep the date and time, asset, unit amount, U.S. dollar value, fee, and the account or wallet involved. Include purchases, disposals, swaps, spending, reward receipts, and transfers. Save the original CSV files too, so you can check your working sheet against the source records later.

When the same coin was acquired in separate transactions, record each acquisition as its own lot. A lot is one group of units with a shared acquisition date and cost. If you later dispose of only part of your holdings, lot-level records help identify the basis of just those units.

Crypto activity often sits across several accounts. SpearTrades' crypto portfolio integrations support exchange syncing through API or CSV, which can help bring trade records into one review flow. Check synced data against your exchange files, especially after wallet transfers or unusual reward events.

Keep records even when you expect a transaction to have no tax impact. A clear transfer trail can prevent you from counting the same asset twice or losing its original cost basis. By now, you should have one dated record for every event and a separate entry for each acquisition lot.

Step 2: Determine the Cost Basis for Each Crypto Lot

Cost basis is the amount assigned to the units you acquired. For a straightforward purchase, it generally starts with the amount paid and includes acquisition fees or commissions. When you later dispose of those units, the basis is compared with the net proceeds.

Use this basic formula:

Gain or loss = net proceeds − adjusted cost basis

For many purchase records, adjusted cost basis is the purchase amount plus acquisition fees. Net proceeds are the value received at disposal minus fees tied to that disposal. This keeps costs on the correct side of the calculation instead of treating the full price change as profit.

Imagine you acquire 0.5 ETH for $1,500 and pay a $5 fee. Your basis for the lot is $1,505. Later, you dispose of the same 0.5 ETH for $1,800 and pay a $6 fee. Net proceeds are $1,794, so the gain is $1,794 minus $1,505, or $289.

For U.S. tax calculations, the method for identifying units matters when you acquired the same asset at different times or prices. Keep the method consistent with your records and tax reporting. Don't replace transaction-level records with a simple average for tax purposes unless a qualified tax professional confirms that method is allowed for your situation.

Also keep transferred assets tied to their original acquisition records. A new exchange account may show when crypto arrived there, but that transfer date is not the date you first acquired it. If the original purchase data is missing, pause and rebuild the history before calculating a gain.

By now, each lot should have a basis you can trace to its source records. If you can't show how you arrived at a number, don't treat that number as final.

Step 3: Calculate Sale Proceeds and Identify Disposals

Next, decide which events count as a disposal and work out the value received. In the U.S., converting crypto to cash is one clear example, but a disposal can also happen when you use crypto to pay for something or exchange it for another token.

For a disposal, record the fair market value of what you received at that time. Then subtract any transaction fee tied to the disposal to find net proceeds. Compare those proceeds with the basis of the units that left your account.

Suppose you acquired 0.02 BTC for $1,200, including acquisition fees. You later exchange it for another crypto asset worth $1,500 and pay a $10 transaction fee. If that fee reduces your proceeds, the net amount is $1,490. Your gain is $290. The new asset generally starts a separate basis record based on its value when received, subject to the tax rules that apply to your situation.

A crypto-to-crypto swap can be easy to overlook because no cash reaches your bank account. The same issue comes up when you spend crypto on a product or service. Record the transaction as a disposal of the crypto used, then preserve the value and basis details for the item or token received.

NFT transactions need their own careful records. If crypto is used to acquire an NFT, track the crypto disposal as well as the NFT's acquisition value. When an NFT is later disposed of, compare its proceeds with its cost basis. Record any platform or network costs that apply, and ask a tax professional about the classification of your specific NFT activity.

Margin and futures activity may involve funding costs, interest, or other contract-specific amounts. Don't force those figures into a simple spot-trade formula without checking how the contract is treated. Keep the trade statement and ask a qualified tax professional how its results should be reported.

Converting crypto to cash, trading one cryptocurrency for another, or using crypto to pay for goods or services can trigger capital gains tax. Rules vary by country, so check local requirements before treating a calculation as a tax result.

Use an online profit calculator as a math aid, not as a replacement for complete records. Enter the units disposed of, their basis, the value received, and fees in the right fields. If the calculator doesn't let you represent a swap, partial disposal, or multiple lots, calculate those parts separately in a spreadsheet.

The video below can help you follow the calculation process visually. As you watch, keep your own transaction details nearby and check that each fee and value is recorded once.

By now, each disposal should have a date, a value received, applicable fees, and a link to the lot whose units left your holdings. That creates the inputs for the next calculation.

Step 4: Calculate Realized and Unrealized Profit or Loss

Realized profit or loss comes from units you've disposed of. Unrealized profit or loss is the change in value of units you still hold. Keep these figures apart. A portfolio can show a paper gain that disappears before you close the position.

For each disposal, calculate net proceeds minus the basis of the units disposed of. Add the results across closed trades to get realized profit or loss for the period. For holdings still open, compare their current value with their remaining cost basis. That gives an estimate of unrealized change, not a locked-in result.

Here is a partial-disposal example. You acquire 1,000 tokens for $0.20 each and pay $4 in acquisition fees. Your total basis is $204. Later, you dispose of 400 tokens when they are worth $0.30 each. The gross value is $120. If the disposal fee is $2, net proceeds are $118.

If your records assign $0.204 of basis to each token, the 400 units have a basis of $81.60. The realized loss is $36.40, calculated as $118 minus $81.60. The remaining 600 tokens retain $122.40 of basis. Don't label the remaining position's price movement as realized profit.

For U.S. tax reporting, the holding period can affect whether a capital gain or loss is short-term or long-term. A holding period of one year or less is generally short-term; more than one year is generally long-term. Keep the acquisition and disposal dates with each lot, and confirm the rules that apply to your filing situation.

In the U.S., using crypto to pay for goods or services is generally a taxable disposal. The gain is the fair market value at the time of purchase minus the original cost basis.

For the trading view, calculate return separately from dollar profit. Return percentage is net profit or loss divided by the basis used, multiplied by 100. A gain measured against the basis represents a return before any costs you haven't included. Keep the denominator clear, especially when comparing trades of different sizes.

SpearTrades portfolio tracking includes cost basis, realized and unrealized P&L, returns, and trade history. Reviewing those figures together can help you make better trading decisions, while the transaction records remain the source for checking each result.

Step 5: Add Crypto Income and Account for Its Separate Cost Basis

Not every crypto gain begins with a purchase. Mining, staking, airdrops, and some DeFi activity can bring tokens into your account as income. Track the receipt separately from any later disposal, because those can be two different tax events.

For U.S. tax purposes, staking rewards are generally treated as income at fair market value when received. That receipt value can become the basis for a later capital gain or loss calculation. Record the token amount, receipt date, and value at that time.

Imagine you receive 2 tokens as a reward when each is worth $15. The receipt value is $30. If you later dispose of both for $42, the later gain is $12 before disposal fees, assuming the $30 receipt value is the applicable basis. If their value falls and you dispose of them for $24, the later result is a $6 loss before fees.

Apply the same recordkeeping logic to mining rewards and airdrops: log the units and their fair market value when received, then retain that value as the starting basis for a later disposal calculation. DeFi rewards may need their own review because the type of activity can affect how the receipt is classified.

Salary paid in crypto is a different kind of receipt from an investment purchase. Record the value and date of payment, and keep the relevant payroll or income record. If you later dispose of those units, calculate the change from the basis established for that receipt.

Don't count the same value twice as income. If a reward was recognized at $30 when received, a later disposal for $42 doesn't make the full $42 new income. The later capital calculation generally compares the disposal value with the existing basis, subject to the facts and rules that apply.

Keep a separate income ledger with the receipt date, asset, amount, dollar value, activity type, and supporting transaction record. A label such as “reward” on its own isn't enough to explain the event later. If a record's tax classification is uncertain, flag it for a tax professional rather than guessing.

By now, your ledger should separate income at receipt from gain or loss at later disposal. That distinction makes the next review much easier.

Step 6: Net Gains and Losses and Review Your Results

Once every event has a value and a category, add realized gains and losses for the period. Keep income entries separate from capital results until you prepare the tax calculation. A single “profit” total can hide the fact that different events may receive different treatment.

Review the records in this order:

Match each disposal to the right asset lot and unit amount.
Check that acquisition and disposal fees appear once, on the correct side of the math.
Compare exchange statements with wallet records and your own ledger.
Separate income receipts from later disposals of those same units.
Mark each open position as unrealized rather than realized.

Then check the common sources of error. A transfer may be mistaken for a disposal. A swap may be missed because it involved no cash. A reward may be counted as both income and full disposal proceeds. A partial disposal may be matched to the basis of more units than actually left the account.

In the U.S., digital asset capital gains and losses are generally reported through tax forms such as Form 8949 and Schedule D, depending on the transaction and reporting facts. Keep your calculations and source records together so you can explain any adjustments. Don't assume that an exchange summary includes activity from other wallets or platforms.

Tax rules also depend on location. A U.S. rule shouldn't be applied automatically to a taxpayer in another country. Check the tax authority in your jurisdiction and ask a qualified professional about your filing position, especially if you have income from mining or DeFi, NFT activity, or complex derivatives.

For trading review, compare the result after fees with the risk taken and the plan you followed. A green number alone doesn't show whether the position size was appropriate or whether an open gain could still reverse. SpearTrades brings portfolio performance views together with Technical Analysis and Risk Analysis tools, so you can assess market context alongside your own profit records.

Its portfolio tracker can show total value, allocation, cost basis, realized and unrealized P&L, trade history, and other portfolio measures. Use those views to spot differences that deserve a closer check, not as a substitute for verifying transaction-level data.

Key Takeaway: A dependable result starts with complete records, a traceable basis for each lot, and a clear split between income, realized results, and open-position changes.

Your review is complete when every total can be traced back to an event, a lot, and a fee record. If a figure cannot be explained, leave it flagged until you can verify it.

FAQ

What is the formula for crypto profit?

Crypto profit or loss is net proceeds minus the cost basis of the units disposed of. Net proceeds generally mean the value received after disposal fees, while basis may include acquisition fees. For a position you still hold, compare current value with remaining basis, but label that change unrealized.

Do crypto-to-crypto swaps count as taxable events?

In the U.S., exchanging one crypto asset for another can create a taxable disposal of the asset you gave up. Record its fair market value at the time of the swap, then compare that value with the disposed asset's basis. Keep the received asset's value as a separate acquisition record for future calculations.

How do I calculate profit on a partial crypto sale?

Calculate the basis only for the units disposed of, then subtract it from their net proceeds. Keep the remaining units and their remaining basis in the open position. Don't count the entire holding's paper gain as realized just because you disposed of part of it.

Are staking rewards included in crypto profit calculations?

Track staking rewards as a separate receipt, including their amount, date, and fair market value. In the U.S., rewards may be treated as income when received, and that receipt value may become their basis for a later disposal. Check the current rules and your facts with a qualified tax professional.

Can a crypto profit calculator work out my taxes?

A calculator can help with arithmetic, but it may not capture every wallet transfer, tax category, or local rule. Check that it supports fees, partial disposals, multiple lots, swaps, and income receipts. Confirm the results against source records and get professional advice for tax filing questions.

Conclusion

Use a lot-by-lot ledger, include fees, and keep income separate from later disposals. Next, reconcile one full period of exchange and wallet records, then use SpearTrades' portfolio tools to review performance alongside cost basis and P&L.
