Altcoin Season Index: What It Measures and How to Read It

The index can jump while the market still isn’t in altcoin season. That’s because it tracks past performance, and providers don’t all count the same coins or update at the same pace.

Here’s what the score measures, how to read its thresholds, and how to pair it with other market checks without treating it as a forecast.

What the Altcoin Season Index Measures

The altcoin season index measures how many eligible altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over a set period, usually a rolling 90 days. It turns that comparison into a score, often from 0 to 100. A higher score means more of the coins in that provider’s basket beat Bitcoin during the window.

That’s a measure of market breadth, not the size of each coin’s gain. If a coin rises less than Bitcoin, it doesn’t count as an outperformer. If both fall, but the altcoin falls less, it can still count. The score tracks relative returns, not whether the market made money overall.

Most versions use 75 as the threshold for altcoin season. That means at least 75% of the eligible coins must outperform Bitcoin over the measurement window. A reading at or below 25 is often labeled Bitcoin season. Scores between those levels suggest a mixed market, though the exact labels depend on the provider.

CoinMarketCap describes its index as a comparison of the top 100 eligible altcoins with Bitcoin over 90 days. Its methodology excludes stablecoins and wrapped or asset-backed tokens, whose prices may not reflect the same market forces as other coins.

The index doesn’t mean every altcoin is rising. A handful of strong assets can lift headlines without meeting the breadth threshold. Nor does one popular token’s rally confirm a broad rotation. The score asks whether most of the selected group beat Bitcoin, not whether a few familiar names had a good run.

Bitcoin dominance can add context. It measures Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market value. When that share falls, it may fit a story of capital rotating toward altcoins. But dominance and the index are different measures: one tracks market value, while the other compares returns across a coin basket. A drop in Bitcoin dominance alone doesn’t prove altcoin season has arrived.

Think of the score as a market breadth gauge. It can tell you how widely recent outperformance is spread, but not which asset will lead next.

How the 90-Day Calculation Works

The 90-day window compares each eligible altcoin’s return with Bitcoin’s return over the same period. Providers then count the altcoins that did better and convert that share into a score. The exact basket and exclusions can vary.

For a simple example, imagine an index with 100 eligible altcoins. If 60 of them beat Bitcoin over the past 90 days, the score would be 60. That result says 60% of the measured group outperformed. It doesn’t say those coins gained 60% or that the remaining 40% all lost value.

A rolling window moves forward as fresh data arrives. Today’s 90-day period shares many days with yesterday’s, but its oldest day drops off, and a new day enters. If several coins had strong gains near the start of the old window, their relative standing can change when those gains no longer count.

The rolling design smooths out some short-lived moves. A sharp week may not shift the index much if the wider quarter still favors Bitcoin. But the same design creates a lag: by the time the score confirms broad outperformance, part of the move has already happened.

Many versions present the score as a percentage, but a displayed score can reflect different coin counts. BlockchainCenter uses the top 50 eligible coins, while CoinMarketCap’s version uses the top 100 eligible coins. The same market can therefore produce different readings across those indexes.

It also matters how a provider defines the basket. Stablecoins, wrapped tokens, and asset-backed coins may be excluded because their price behavior differs from that of other crypto assets. The current list can change as market rankings change, so a chart’s constituents aren’t necessarily fixed for all time.

When you check a score, note the provider, the size of its coin basket, and its exclusions. Without those details, two scores that look comparable may be measuring different groups.

Why Altcoin Season Index Readings Can Differ

Data sources matter, too. Several versions use CoinMarketCap price data, while others describe their own market data. When indexes share a data source, their readings may move in similar ways. That isn’t independent confirmation from separate markets.

Refresh timing can make a difference during a fast move. CoinMarketCap presents its chart as real-time, CryptoTicker says it updates every 15 minutes, Coinfuty updates hourly, and BlockchainCenter refreshes daily. Check the page’s own update note before comparing readings from different times.

Coinfuty’s index is built around futures-listed coins, rather than a general spot basket. That can make it useful for a futures-market view, but it won’t answer exactly the same question as an index built from a broader coin list.

Small score gaps can come from timing or basket differences, not a meaningful change in market direction. Before you react, compare the method and timestamp. Then track one provider consistently so you can see how its own reading changes over time.

How to Interpret the Index Without Overreading It

Read the index as a description of recent relative performance, not a signal that tells you what to do next. The threshold helps label market breadth, but it doesn’t promise that the trend will continue.

A low score means few eligible altcoins beat Bitcoin during the past 90 days. A middle score suggests mixed results. A high score means more of the basket outperformed, and a score of 75 or more meets the common definition of altcoin season.

Direction adds another layer. A score rising from 30 to 55 suggests more of the basket has recently moved ahead of Bitcoin, even though it hasn’t reached 75. A score slipping from 85 to 70 signals that breadth has weakened, though the market may still have many strong altcoins.

Also check what Bitcoin did during the same period. If Bitcoin rallied strongly, altcoins may struggle to beat it even while their own prices rise. If Bitcoin declines, an altcoin can outperform by losing less. Neither case, by itself, tells you whether holding that asset was profitable.

Historical charts help show whether a reading is a quick spike or part of a longer shift. Look at how long the index stayed near or above its threshold and whether it fell soon after. Past periods can show how the measure behaved; they can’t set a reliable timetable for the next cycle.

For an entry decision, use the index as a broad market filter. If it’s rising, you might then check whether the specific asset has its own signs of strength, such as improving momentum or stronger volume. If the score is already high, don’t assume an asset still has room to run. A crowded trend can turn quickly.

For an exit decision, the index can flag fading breadth when it falls. It can’t tell you the best price to leave an asset. Set that decision using your own risk limits and the asset’s behavior, rather than waiting for a particular index score.

For a closer asset-level check, SpearTrades’ crypto analysis of health, technical, and risk factors can help you look beyond market-wide breadth. The point is to test a specific idea, not to turn one index score into a trade plan.

Keep a short log of the reading, its direction, and the provider. That makes it easier to tell whether your view changed because the market shifted or because you switched indexes.

Limitations and Common Misreadings

The index looks backward. Its 90-day window tells you which assets already outperformed Bitcoin, not which ones will do so next. A fast shift in sentiment can happen before the score catches up, and a high score can remain after momentum has started to fade.

It also treats each qualifying coin as a count, not as a share of market value. A smaller eligible asset and a much larger one can each add one point to the count. The index doesn’t show how much capital moved or how liquid those assets are.

That creates a common misread: a score of 75 doesn’t mean 75% of the market’s money moved into altcoins. It means 75% of the index’s eligible coins beat Bitcoin over the chosen window. It also doesn’t mean every altcoin rose in price.

Another error is to call a few big winners a season. Strong gains in a narrow group may attract attention, but the index requires broad outperformance across its selected basket. Check the distribution beneath the headline score if the provider shows individual coin returns.

The cutoff can mislead, too. A score of 74 and a score of 75 differ by one point, but that doesn’t mean the market changed sharply in an instant. The threshold is a convention for labeling broad performance. It isn’t a guarantee or a precise turning point.

Coin selection can create blind spots. A top-50 or top-100 basket won’t represent every small or newly listed coin. The basket may also change as market rankings shift. That means the index can miss activity outside its coverage, even when a particular corner of the market is moving fast.

And the index doesn’t measure risk directly. Altcoins can have thinner liquidity than Bitcoin, which can make price moves sharper in either direction. A high reading doesn’t remove the risk of a deep decline, a wide spread, or a sudden change in sentiment.

Stablecoin supply, total value locked, and active addresses can add context about liquidity and network use. Venture funding data may show which projects are drawing investor interest. Treat these as separate research clues, not proven early warnings: none guarantees that a token will outperform Bitcoin or that the index will rise.

Before acting on a high score, check your exposure and decide how much loss you can accept. A broad market signal can inform that review, but it can’t set your risk limit for you.

Using the Index Alongside Other Market Research

The index works best as one part of a market review. Start with the broad question it answers: are many eligible altcoins beating Bitcoin? Then check what’s driving the reading and whether it applies to the asset you’re studying.

Bitcoin dominance is one useful companion measure. A declining share may fit a period of rotation, but it doesn’t show where capital went. Pair it with market volume and the index’s coin-level results. That helps separate broad participation from a narrow rally.

Technical analysis can help with a specific asset. RSI is a momentum measure that can show whether recent price moves have been strong or weak. MACD compares moving averages to show shifts in momentum. Neither indicator predicts a result on its own, so check the time frame and price trend before drawing a conclusion.

A screener can help narrow a large watchlist by technical conditions. For example, you can look for assets with a chosen RSI range or a MACD crossover, then inspect each chart yourself. SpearTrades’ crypto screener supports filters across market and technical conditions, which can make that review more orderly.

Risk checks matter just as much. Compare volatility and past drawdowns, then consider whether the asset’s liquidity fits your plan. A token that rose quickly may also have fallen sharply in earlier market phases. Past performance doesn’t promise a repeat, but it can show the kinds of swings you need to be ready for.

On-chain measures can add another view. Stablecoin supply may help you think about available market liquidity; total value locked can show activity in certain protocols; active addresses can give a rough view of network use. Each metric has its own limits, and none should be treated as a direct forecast of the index.

Funding announcements can help you track interest in projects, but investment in a project doesn’t guarantee token performance. Check token supply, unlock schedules, and the market’s response instead of assuming that a well-funded project will lead the next broad rally.

Market psychology can distort what the index seems to say. Retail traders may focus on fast-moving tokens and social attention. Larger investors may have different time frames or market constraints. The index doesn’t separate these groups or explain their motives; it only counts relative returns.

We recommend keeping a consistent review: note the provider and its method, look at the score’s direction, then check the asset’s own trend and risk. SpearTrades brings market feeds, technical analysis, risk analysis, alerts, and portfolio tracking into one research workflow, so you can make better trading decisions without mistaking one indicator for a full answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the altcoin season index measure?

The altcoin season index measures how many eligible altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over a recent period, usually 90 days. Providers express that share as a score, often from 0 to 100. It measures relative performance across a selected basket, not the total amount of money entering altcoins or the likely direction of future prices.

What score confirms altcoin season?

A score of 75 or higher is the common threshold for altcoin season, meaning at least 75% of the selected coins outperformed Bitcoin over the period. Check the provider’s rules before using that cutoff. Coin baskets and exclusions differ, so a 75 on one index may not match another provider’s measure exactly.

Is Ethereum an altcoin in the index?

Ethereum is generally considered an altcoin because it isn’t Bitcoin, but whether it appears in a particular index depends on that provider’s eligible coin list. Check the current basket and exclusions on the index page. The list can change as rankings shift, and some assets may be excluded for reasons tied to their price structure.

Why can two altcoin season indexes show different scores?

Two indexes can differ because one may count the top 50 eligible coins while another counts the top 100. They may also use different data sources or update at different times. Compare the basket, exclusions, and latest update time before deciding whether a gap reflects market change or a difference in calculation.

Does a high index score mean altcoins will keep rising?

No. A high score means many eligible altcoins have already beaten Bitcoin during the measured window. It doesn’t predict future returns or protect against a sharp reversal. Check the specific asset’s trend, liquidity, and risk before making a decision, and don’t treat the threshold as an automatic entry or exit signal.

Conclusion

Use the index to judge how broad recent altcoin outperformance has been, then confirm the picture with asset-level and risk checks. Pick one provider, record its reading and method, and use that consistent view in your market review. For related learning material, explore the SpearTrades crypto resources hub.
